UK summons Iranian envoy over “horrific reports” of protest violence
The British foreign secretary announced that the Iranian envoy was summoned to underscore the severity of the situation and to insist that Tehran address what has been described as horrific actions against protesters. “to underline the gravity of this moment and to call Iran to answer for the horrific reports that we are hearing,” she said.
Cooper noted that during a recent phone conversation with her Iranian counterpart, she emphasized the UK’s “total abhorrence of the killings, the violence and the repression” and pressed for an immediate cessation of such actions. She also highlighted that the government would not tolerate any threats on UK soil linked to Iran.
Supporting British citizens in Iran remains a top priority for London, Cooper added, while reiterating the need for coordinated international pressure, both economic and diplomatic, on Iranian authorities. “Overall, this government has imposed over 220 Iran sanctions designations since coming into office,” she said, pledging further legislation to expand sanctions across key sectors. “Further measures will target finance, energy, transport, software and other significant industries which are advancing Iranian nuclear escalation,” she added.
The protests, which began on Dec. 28 at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar amid sharp currency devaluation and worsening economic conditions, have since spread to multiple cities across Iran. While the government has not released official casualty numbers, rights organizations report at least 646 deaths, including both protesters and security personnel, and more than 1,000 injuries.
